Since announcing his intentions to come out of retirement in 2020, the sports world and social media have been speculating as to who Floyd Mayweather Jr. will fight next. It appears we may have possible clarity on this front.

Over the last few days, reports have come out that Mayweather Jr. is interested in a rematch against Manny Pacquiao and a crossover fight against an MMA star. The undefeated professional boxer is targeting a fight in May 2020 and a second bout in September 2020, which are the most popular times of the year for the sport of boxing.

With the prospects of a crossover fight gaining serious momentum, there’s no shortage of suitable candidates for Mayweather as numerous MMA fighters have expressed interest in fighting “Money Mayweather.”

Let’s examine the possible MMA candidates and the highly desired rematch with Manny Pacquiao.

Floyd Mayweather Jr’s Announcement

Last week, Mayweather went on his social media accounts and stated that he was coming out of retirement next year. He also went on to mention how he and UFC President Dana White were going to work together to put on an event in 2020.

This announcement created quite the buzz as fight sports fans and media outlets were guessing as to who he would fight next and if Floyd would actually consider participating in an MMA fight.

Although the dream of Floyd stepping inside the octagon won’t become a reality, it does appear he is planning a crossover fight against an MMA star. That’s where Dana White comes in as Mayweather would need the UFC President’s support for this fight to happen.

Mayweather vs Pacquiao Rematch

Since Floyd is all about making the most money he can, there’s no larger payday in boxing than a rematch against Manny Pacquiao.

For nearly a decade, boxing fans have been clamoring for these two athletes to fight. Initially, it took nearly five years of posturing and negotiating, before they finally came to an agreement and squared off on May 2nd, 2015. Floyd would win via unanimous decision in a lackluster fight that left millions of fans disappointed.

However, the bout was highly successful at the Box Office and on PPV. Mayweather vs Pacquiao drew 4.6 million PPV buys and grossed over $410 million in revenue. It surpassed the previous records set between Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez.

Although a rematch between Pacquiao and Mayweather would be a massive payday for the two, it won’t come nearly as close to the numbers the first fight did.

Mayweather vs Pacquiao II Betting Odds

One area where a rematch between these two boxing legends will draw big numbers is with sportsbooks. From online sports betting to the traditional brick and mortars, a rematch of this magnitude will draw huge numbers especially with legalized sports betting in at least 1/3rd of the states as of this writing. By next year, this number will double.

Boxing betting sites have already gotten a jump on drawing in some wagers as they’ve listed odds for this rematch. Mayweather is the betting favorite with odds ranging from -190 to -254. Pacquiao is the underdog with odds from +155 to +210.

In addition to the moneylines, there are numerous prop bets available like round betting and method of victory:

Online gambling for mayweather fight 2017
  • Pacquiao wins by TKO/KO or DQ (+250)
  • Pacquiao wins via Decision (+100)
  • Fight is a Draw (+2500)

If you are eager to place a wager on this fight, and don’t want to wait until the spring of 2020, then my early advice is to take Pacquiao winning via Decision. At +100 odds, you are getting good value. However, I do believe that this line could go up in a few months which means you might get better payouts by waiting.

Will the Rematch Really Happen?

According to a recent report by TMZ Sports, Manny Pacquiao is the only boxer that Mayweather is seriously considering. Furthermore, he wants this fight to take place in May 2020.

That shouldn’t be a surprise considering the payday argument above and the fact that May 2nd, 2020 will mark the five year anniversary of their first fight. Guess what, that date falls on a Saturday.

If Not Manny, How About Canelo Alvarez?

The only other boxer that could offer Floyd Mayweather Jr. a huge payday is Canelo Alvarez. Right now, the Mexican superstar is approaching all-time great status as he keeps collecting world titles in different weight classes.

The two men fought in 2013 when Alvarez was still learning the ropes and moving up in the food chain. It’s the only loss on his record. Since then, Alvarez has taken over the sport of boxing in terms of star power and money.

As much as Team Alvarez and boxing fans would love to see this rematch, it’s never going to happen. They’re too far apart in weight and Canelo is too big for Floyd. Earlier this week, Alvarez even acknowledged that this fight won’t happen:

“I have always imagined it [the rematch against Mayweather], but I view it as an apprenticeship more so than a defeat. I would love to [fight him again], but I don’t think he’s going to turn [in this direction].”

Which MMA Star Will Get the Crossover Fight?

With the first of two fights most likely being against Manny Pacquiao, we can turn our attention towards the second fight which will most likely take place in September 2020. TMZ Sports also reported that this second fight will most likely be against an MMA star and take place at the Las Vegas Raiders new football stadium.

Since his announced return from retirement, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has received numerous challenges from MMA fighters. One challenge we can write off is the rematch between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Mayweather has moved on from this possibility. Additionally, there’s very little buzz from fight fans over a McGregor rematch. In fact, only McGregor and diehard UFC fans are even concerned with what Conor does next. Well, them and elderly bar patrons.

So, with McGregor out of the way, that leaves us with the following possibilities:

UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov

Since his victory over Conor McGregor in October 2018, Khabib Nurmagomedov has been the one MMA star that’s drawn the most buzz as a potential opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr. Initially, both sides had preliminary discussions, but nothing ever came from them.

Khabib would go on to serve out his suspension for the post-fight brawl with McGregor and then come back this year and pummel Dustin Poirier who was the interim lightweight champion. Now, Nurmagomedov is set to face Tony Ferguson in April 2020.

Nurmagomedov is a sizable favorite over Ferguson with -250 odds compared to Ferguson’s +210 odds. However, most MMA pundits would declare that Ferguson is Nurmagomedov toughest opponent to date. I believe Ferguson could pull off the upset.

If Ferguson wins this fight then there’s not going to be any boxing match with Floyd. I don’t even see how anyone would find a fight between Nurmagomedov and Mayweather to be compelling at all. McGregor is a far better striker than Nurmagomedov and he ended up losing via TKO in the 10th round.

Sports betting websites also agree with this sentiment as they’ve listed Mayweather as a -1500 to -2000 betting favorite. Nurmagomedov is a +800 to +900 underdog. In comparison, Mayweather closed as a -750 favorite over the +230 McGregor.

There’s no betting value or money in a fight between Floyd and Khabib no matter how much Dana White and Floyd Mayweather Jr. try to hype it up.

Former UFC Bantamweight Champ T.J. Dillashaw

I actually find this possibility to be more comical than legitimate. Within the last 24 hours, Dillashaw has thrown his name into the hat to try and get a fight against Mayweather. Speaking with ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, Dillashaw made the following comments about fighting Floyd:

“Mayweather wants a UFC star thats good at striking. I’ve got a whole year to reinvent myself to become a boxer. I’ve got the who’s-who in the boxing world. I can train with the Lomachenkos, Terence Crawfords, he ain’t going to be able to wear me out and finish me because of my cardio. I think that’s a very intriguing fight. I’d love to get that Mayweather fight, not even for the money – just for the fact of proving us UFC fighters (have) got what it takes to get in that ring.”

What’s comical about this idea is that Dillashaw is currently serving a two year ban for taking EPO. We all know about Mayweather’s long history of drug testing and being anti-PED. It’s what held up the first fight against Pacquiao for at least three years.

I can’t imagine a world where Mayweather would agree to fight Dillashaw. Can you imagine the promos and press conferences? Mayweather would eat Dillashaw for breakfast over the drug suspension and then finish him off for dinner inside the ring.

UFC BMF Champion Jorge Masvidal

There’s nobody hotter in the UFC right now than Jorge Masvidal. Coming off an impressive, albeit controversial stoppage, win over Nate Diaz at MSG, Jorge Masvidal has become a superstar. He went 3-0 in 2019 beating Diaz, Till and Askren. His knockout of Askren was the fastest in UFC history.

Further evidence of Masvidal’s star power can be seen in the proof of his UFC 244 fight against Diaz. Not only did Masvidal win the BMF belt, he had Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson put the belt on him after the fight and he had boxing legend Roberto Duran walk him to the ring.

MSG was sold out, ESPN PPV did big numbers and even President Trump was in the building.

Forget Nurmagomedov, McGregor, Dillashaw, Nunes, Cyborg and any other MMA fighter. The one combat sports athlete that should stand across from Mayweather in a crossover fight is Jorge Masvidal.

The immediate issue with Masvidal is the weight. Like Canelo Alvarez, who Masvidal has said he wants to fight, Jorge competes in the welterweight division which is 170 pounds. Mayweather has never fought above the 154 weight class.

As if to squash any future doubts, Masvidal took to Twitter this week and bluntly addressed if he can make it back down to 154 pounds:

Yes it is true. I can make 154 #theresurrection

— Jorge Masvidal UFC (@GamebredFighter) November 26, 2019

Masvidal’s striking has never been better, he’s never been more popular, and there’s no better opponent than “Street Jesus” for a Mayweather crossover fight.

This is one dude that doesn’t fear anyone. Masvidal made his bones in street fighting and is as ruthless as they come inside the octagon. It’s not about creating public interest for Masvidal, it’s about creating masterpieces in a fight by knocking out his opponents.

Will Floyd Mayweather Jr. Really Fight Twice in 2020?

Other than “can you pass the potatoes?” this is the one question that will be on most fight sports fans minds on Thanksgiving.

If there’s one thing that Don King and Vince McMahon have taught me, it’s that slogans and catchphrases have merit. So, to answer the question regarding Mayweather’s plans for 2020 – “If the money is right, Floyd will fight!

Since Dana White is collaborating with Floyd Mayweather Jr., I believe there’s a small chance that a crossover fight happens next year. I wouldn’t hold my breath, but White tends to deliver on his word when it comes to promoting fights.

As for the rematch with Pacquiao, it makes too much “dollars and sense” not to do this fight.

The stars have lined up perfectly for a rematch on the 5th anniversary of their first fight. We should find out in early 2020 if this fight will happen.

Until then, there’s one thing we can definitely bet on – Floyd’s plans for 2020 will have more twists, turns, rumors and smokescreens than any soap opera on TV today.

All that’s missing in this circus is WWE’s The Big Show coming out and demanding a rematch against Floyd just like Pacquiao and McGregor.

The huge inter-sport bout we’ve all been waiting for is roughly a month away, as Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. will officially touch gloves on August 26th in Las Vegas, Nevada. The hypeand anticipation continues to mount, even as the two fighting icons wrapped up a touch-and-go promotion tour recently.

Mayweather and McGregor exchanged questionable vocal jabs in the eye of the media, but the real jabs everyone will be interested in will end up taking place at the T-Mobile Arena. The excitementof a boxing versus MMA battle has fans all riled up, as they struggle to gauge which fighter will come out on top.

This bout looked to be severely one-sided when it was first announced (Mayweather at -2000 at Bovada in May), as most sportsbooks backed Mayweather with ridiculously heavy lines. Even thoughthat’s probably where their confidence should have stuck, things have evened out considerably since the fight was made official. At the #1 rated betting site Bovada, we’re still seeing Mayweatheras a massive favorite (-450), but McGregor’s playability (+325) has taken a sharp hit.
